Chanel Jewelry

The vast and glittering collection of the Chanel jewelry owes its beauty to the brilliance of its founder mademoiselle Chanel. Orphaned at an early age, she worked with her sister and opened a shop in 1912. After the First World War, she opened a couture outlet in Rue de Cambon in Paris, which was to be her home and office for the rest of her life. Her success was phenomenal, especially after she stormed the market with her world renowned perfume "Chanel No. 5."

Fresh from her success, Chanel sensed the need to change the way fashion was being perceived. She brought into the fore the casual and elegant form by designing tight corseting fabric. She thought it befitting to also launch costume jewelry that would look as good as real jewels. Some of the best designers helped her design the best costume jewelry. She made costume jewelry a part of casual wear and daytime wear, unlike the real jewels which were to be worn during festivals and special occasions. Soon she started including gold and bead chains and charm bracelets in her jewelry offerings. One of the most famous costume jewelry that she introduced was the jewelry brooch.

Years passed, and the costume jewelry was still a rage. Rich and famous women strived for the glamorous “Chanel look”. Her jewelry was bold and theatrical in its look. She adopted red and green as her signature combination in her costume jewelry. Chanel’s approach to jewelry design was such that she kept pieces of flexible modeling plastic, which she would shape into jewelry. She would insert real and fake gemstones into the plastic as she toiled, experimenting to get the exact color combination and balance she wanted.
