The Background of Chanel
Considered as the leading brand in high-end of fashion, Chanel’s appeal reflects classic and elegant tastes. This French brand dominated fashion for several decades, and its style and quality recognized all over the world. The House of Chanel, which was founded by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971), set the trend for clothes and fashion described as comfortable, but glamorous.
Doing away with corsets, which were the kind of clothes women wore during her time, Coco Chanel understood how modern women should live. Her designs included simple but meticulous styles, first undertaking dresses, trousers, jewelry and hats. She later on ventured into perfumes, and textiles, and subsequently, accessories like sunglasses. Some of her designs embody the “little boy look” but integrate a hint of femininity.
Coco Chanel rose to world-wide fame in 1923, with her perfume, Chanel No. 5. She is credited to have influenced the “little black dress” by transforming the color black to symbolize elegance instead of mourning. Coco Chanel’s influences include modern artists and revolutionary thinkers like Picasso, Diaghilev and Cocteau and was once described as someone who applied artistic rules and values to fashion, what most artists apply to their paintings and music. Coco Chanel is an icon in the fashion industry. Her staying power is attributed to the fact that her style and designs remain classic and adaptable to the changing times. She is perhaps one of the most imitated designers of the world.
Her legacy continues to this day, thanks to Karl Lagerfeld, who now heads The House of Chanel. Lagerfeld ushered the brand name, Chanel, in the 21st century, when he created spin-offs for the brand in terms of make-up, luggage and eyewear, specifically sunglasses. Chanel sunglasses are not only for utility or vision aid, but these have become a fashion statement.
Famous celebrity clients of the Chanel brand include: Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Uma Thurman, Christina Ricci and Laura Bailey. Chanel’s future in the fashion business shows no signs of slowing down. Its global identity is one of sophistication and timeless elegance, characterizing what women of the 21st century hold in high regard.
